About Sonorex

E.S.W.T (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) is an innovative, non invasive method for treatment of localized musculoskeletal pain.

Sonorex treatment is extremely safe. Many physicians believe it should be used prior to taking drugs or receiving steriod injections because it is safer. Certainly it should be considered prior to undergoing surgical treatment.

Studies show that in appropriately selected patients, Sonorex therapy has a success rate of between 70 and 90 percent. It is not however a 'miracle cure', and its pain releiving and healing effects may need to be combined with other forms of treatment i.e physiotherapy, braces, orthotics.

What we offer?

The Sports Therapy Clinic is therefore pleased to offer Sonorex, the first E.S.W.T machine in Ottawa and one of only four available in Canada. The following are the common tendonopathy's treated by the Sonorex machine.
  • Tendonitis of the shoulder
  • Tennis or golfers elbow (lateral or medial epicondylitis)
  • Tendonitis of the knee (patellar tendonitis)
  • Tendonitis of the foot (achilles tendonitis)
  • Heel spur (plantar fasciitis)
Treatments are all administered by a registered physiotherapist who in addition have undergone specialist training to become a certified E.S.W.T therapist.

Other Important Points

Sonorex treatments must be approved by a physician. It is necessary to have a recent (90 days) imaging study of the affected area e.g X-ray, diagnostic ultrasound or M.R.I. The referring physician can waive this condition if he feels it is unnecessary.

The affected area must have a 'Trigger' point or points i.e specific tender area that can be identified. This will be the target for the treatments.

Treatments are usually given over 3 sessions. These will be approximately a week apart.
